If you’re aiming for a top engineering college in India, two exams decide your path: JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Students often confuse the two, so here is a clear, side-by-side guide to what each one is, who it’s for, and how to plan your preparation.

What is JEE Main?

JEE Main is the national-level entrance exam for admission to NITs, IIITs, and other centrally funded technical institutions. It is also the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced. Conducted by the NTA, it is held in multiple sessions each year, and your best score counts.

What is JEE Advanced?

JEE Advanced is the gateway to the IITs. Only the top rankers from JEE Main (typically the top ~2.5 lakh candidates) are eligible to appear. It is known for testing deeper conceptual understanding and problem-solving rather than speed alone.

How to prepare for both

  • Build one strong foundation. The syllabus overlaps heavily — master concepts once and apply them to both exams.
  • Practice speed for Main, depth for Advanced. Main rewards accuracy under time pressure; Advanced rewards multi-step reasoning.
  • Take regular mock tests. Simulate real conditions weekly and review every mistake.
  • Start early. Students who begin serious concept-building in Class 9–10 find Class 11–12 far easier.
