India just filed a record 1,43,729 patents in FY 2025-26 — a 30% jump in a single year. But behind that headline is a quieter story every young innovator should understand: filing a patent and getting one granted are very different things.

The boom is real

India’s patent filings have grown for five years straight. What’s changed most is who is filing — Indians. In 2013, residents filed just a quarter of India’s patents; today it’s the majority. As Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal put it, “Made in India” is now being powered by “Invented in India.”

The gap behind the numbers

Here’s where it gets interesting. A recent analysis found India’s top-50 private universities filed about 32× more patents than the top-50 government institutes — yet far fewer of those private filings were actually granted. Volume isn’t the same as value.

📊 Grant rate tells the real story: private institutes ≈ 2% of filings granted, government institutes ≈ 31%. Filing 100 patents means little if only 2 survive examination.

What this means for you

India’s innovation engine is genuinely accelerating — a huge opportunity if you’re a student in engineering, AI, or the sciences. But the lesson underneath the boom is the one that actually builds careers: quality beats quantity. One well-researched, genuinely novel idea that gets granted is worth more than a hundred rushed filings that never do.

The takeaway

Learn to build things that truly work and truly matter — the patents, and the careers, follow. That’s exactly the project-first way we teach AI/ML, robotics and research at FirstVidya.
