What SIH actually is
SIH is a nationwide hackathon run by the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell with AICTE. Real organisations post real problems (“problem statements”); student teams build working solutions and pitch them to expert juries. It runs in two flavours — a Software edition (a fast 36-hour build) and a Hardware edition (a longer, multi-day build for physical prototypes).

Every problem statement sits under one of these theme areas. Scan them first — your team’s strengths should point you to two or three:
The team rules people miss
- Exactly 6 members — including the team leader. Not 5, not 7.
- At least 1 female member is mandatory in every team.
- All 6 from the same institution — inter-college teams are not allowed.
- Everything routes through your SPOC — find yours early; they control registration and nominations.
- Your college can nominate up to 50 teams (45 shortlisted + 5 waitlisted); a university, up to 100.
- Up to 2 mentors (industry/academia) can join a finalist team — optional, added for the finale.
How to choose a problem statement (the real strategy)
- Match it to what you can actually build. A working demo beats a beautiful idea you can’t show.
- Read the “expected solution” word by word. Juries score you against that, not against your imagination.
- Avoid the obvious crowd-favourites if you can — the flashy PS attract dozens of teams; a slightly niche one improves your odds.
- Check feasibility in the time you have — 36 hours (software) is short. Scope ruthlessly.
- Submit early. Each team can enter up to 2 problem statements, and every PS locks after 500 idea submissions — don’t wait for the deadline.
The winning playbook
- Prototype > slides. A clickable/working demo is the single biggest differentiator on finale day.
- Solve the exact problem. Judges have the statement in front of them — hit every requirement it lists.
- Tell a story. Problem → your solution → impact → how it scales. Two crisp minutes.
- Plan the hours. Assign roles, freeze features early, leave time to test and rehearse the pitch.
- Use your mentors. A quick feedback loop before the finale catches gaps you can’t see.
